Notting Hill Carnival – London

Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival LogoIn 1966 the first outdoor festival took place in the streets of Notting Hill. A local resident and social worker Rhaune Laslett – a Londoner of Native American and Russian descent – organised an event for local children. Notting Hill Carnival has its origins in the carnival traditions of the Caribbean and the social and political conditions of the post-1948 migration of peoples from the Caribbean. … By the 1950s, Brixton and Notting Hill had the largest population of Caribbean people in Britain.

Through the years Carnival has become “The Largest Street Party” in Europe and over the 2 days a many as a million people would have attended and revelled in the footprint of the 2 boroughs. There are 5 disciplines and they are all under the banner and ultimate control of the Notting Hill Carnival Ltd. Each of the disciplines now have a representative that sits on the advisory board of Notting Hill carnival.

2020 will leave an indelible mark because for the first time there was no attendance on the streets of London due to Covid 19 but it was also the years that Carnival was delivered online. By seeing the website you will see that there was a vast input from all involved and more to bring carnival to the online masses, even more viewers than those would attend normally. It is surreal that the date came and passed with the contributors had much less to do. Most of the static sound systems did deliver carnival online. For sure Rough But Sweet Sound & LOVE TKO SOUND played music online throughout the 2 days delivering 14 hours for all to enjoy and it was the same for many other disciplines.

The 5 Disciplines are :

  1. Mas

  2. Static Sound Systems

  3. Calypso

  4. Soca

  5. Steel Pan BAS

It is very much hoped that Carnival will be back on the streets of London in 2021 hopefully with the pandemic behind us and all the disciplines ready to perform with added energy. We will then be reminded on how hard it is to deliver carnival but it is well worth the effort especially when the weather is fine and the crowds are adoring.
